we worship water

What is Nilus?

It is a nature-based solution to store water and protect resources that sustainably manage and restore foothill ecosystems.

INSPIRATION

Our great inspiration comes from the Himalayas, specifically from Ladakh, India.

There, the engineer Sonam Wangchuk, started the “Ice Stupa” project a few years ago, where they built these “Ice Stupas”, also motivated by the engineer Chewang Norphel who in the 80s was one of the pioneers in horizontal “artificial glacier” techniques.

Our objectives

Rehabilitate foothill ecosystems through the implementation of “artificial glaciers” and an AI model for water and climate management.

Promote a cultural change to recognize water as a sacred element essential for life.

Practice science WITH ACTION and gain the experience to scale it globally, creating an ice stupa field along with high-tech laboratory.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The central operation is simple, from a water source, it is guided down to a sufficient height difference that allows this gravitational potential energy to be used to spray the water on a base structure, such as a dome.

Under the right conditions, this water will freeze more quickly since it has been reduced in size. In this way, conical-shaped ice is generated, a geometry that allows the melting speed to be reduced by having less surface area exposed to the sun.

This allows us to capture and accumulate water during the winter season and allow access to it in the summer, increasing the melting cycle.

OUR PILOT

During 2021 we held our first Ice Stupa in Parque Arenas in San José de Maipo.
